How Not To Boost Google PageRank

All website owners and webmasters want a high PageRank (PR) for their site.

A higher PR means a higher rank in the SERPs (Search Engine Results Page) ergo, higher traffic volume. That’s a no-brainer. The problem is that some things you do to try to increase your PR can get you into trouble. Some can end up only lowering your PR and some can actually get you banned from Google entirely.

  Page Rank Tips

Let’s start with the biggest issue.

One way to get into trouble with Google, or any search engine for that matter, is to have too many outgoing links on a page. Why? Because the search engines are programmed to believe that pages with excessive amounts of outbound links are “link farms” and will either penalize, ignore, or ban your site as a result. To avoid this issue keep your links to the Google recommended maximum of no more than 100 per page. If you have a large site with several hundred pages, more than likely the area that could be the biggest problem is your site map, so to avoid any possible problems just break it up into 2 or more pages.

Adding new pages to your site won’t increase your PR unless you understand how to link them properly. Each new page you add needs to be linked to an important page in your site. This is because Google won’t index pages that have not been linked to other pages. But not only do they need to be linked to an important page, they also have to be linked to from at least one other page in your site. Of course, there are certain types of pages that should never be added. These are pages that are all identical, or nearly identical, and are known as cookie-cutters. Google considers them to be spam and they can cause the pages, and possibly the entire site, to be penalized.

  Page Rank Tips

Believe it or not, linking to some very popular, high ranking website won’t help you boost your PR. Why?

Because they usually have many, many other outgoing links sharing their PR score. Remember, the amount of PR a page can pass along is the amount of PR divided by the number of outgoing links. You would benefit more by acquiring several links to low ranked sites that are new and still working on their PR. Why? Because these sites have several benefits over monster sites and can benefit your PR better. There are several articles on this subject if you want to know more.

The general consensus on the internet is that the best way to boost your PR is to forget about it and concentrate on the quality and content of your site. Make a high quality site that offers value to your customers and other people will naturally want to link to it. If you opt for an SEO (Search Engine Optimization) service make sure they are reputable and don’t participate in the known linking schemes taking place. Good luck.
