Who are the people behind the machine?
Yes there are real people working this complex system. We know them as the “Google boys” and they are the founders of this incredibly successful business. Their names are Larry Page and Sergey Brin. Google was conceived by these 2 when they were just students, studying computer science. Page Rank is named after Larry Page and is made up of all the algorithms that Google uses to index sites for their search engine.
They worked out a clever business plan that shot them to the top of the search engine their strategies were as follows:
Their name: at first glance this strange name just doesn’t make sense, there was method in their madness:
- Google is a strange but very memorable name. Short, simple and strange. Easy to make a household name and encourage viral marketing.
- It does have a meaning-“Googol” or googolplex is a 1 followed by 100 zeros. This is a number without end. Of course the Google boys wanted that many searches to be done on their search engine.

Their knowledge of the business:
They are 2 extremely sharp and brilliant programmers with a flair for business. Two qualities that have proven just right for making a search engine business that will be number one.
A unique selling position (USP): when Google was first conceived they had a lot of innovative and unique features that set their search engine apart from any competition. Despite competition copying them Google still manages to stay ahead with innovative ideas.
Strategic alliances: Now everyone is aware of the initial marriage of Google and Yahoo. The Google boys chose their partner carefully. Yahoo was the biggest player on the Internet at this time. In fact Yahoo provided the clout and an enormous database of people needing a search machine. Yahoo did not have one at this time they were simply a directory. This alliance skyrocketed Google to the top and when the time came they broke away and climbed even higher. Yahoo tried to compete with their own search engine but as yet cannot get close to the Google machine.
Free is good: Google’s search engine is completely free to use and submit to. This makes it easy for Google to gather more customers for their search engine and websites to service their customers. A moneymaker: The logical moneymaker was advertising, Pay-Per-Click with a twist. This is how Google Adwords was born. It rapidly became a much used and very efficient way to advertise products, services and even affiliate programs. The latter was a master stroke as many regular PPCs do not allow affiliate programs. With this revenue Google can afford to devekop new and better strategies for its search engine and still keep it free.
The Google tool bar: A useful little bar that promotes Google searches and of course more viral marketing as people can get to their website with just one click of the mouse. Of course it is free. This is where webmasters can view their Page Rank and that of others.
This is the brief story of Google and their rise to fame and fortune. They used remarkably simple but very effective strategies to drive their business to the top. These are techniques that you can also use to succeed in your business. Now you can see why Google is such a powerful and necessary partner for you.
